Who I Am Matters

Where I'm From?

I'm an East Coast girl! Specifically, I am in the southern part of New Jersey, and I am literally 10 minutes away from Philly across a bridge. I could probably walk there if I wanted to. Philly > my hometown for sure though. My town is super small, and the only redeeming thing we have is this store called Wawa, which is like a 7-Eleven but so much better haha.

Where I'm Going?

Hopefully if things stay as planned, I'm going to Seattle to pursue my marketing career at Microsoft! Where the weather is rainy, and the city is calm. When you really think about it, it's kind of the opposite of LA. But hot take...I actually don't really like LA haha! It's too hot for me! But I really love USC, so that's pretty funny. Fingers crossed I end up liking Seattle though. 🤞

How I'm Getting There?

I was thinking about either just taking a plane there....OR I can do a road trip! For those reading this, comment down below which one I should do.

How I'm LIKE My Parents?

I've heard that I look like them, so that's one!

How I'm UNLIKE My Parents?

Honestly, I feel like I am really different from my mom (dad isn't around). She's pretty extroverted, and I'm super introverted. She's loud, and I can be loud too sometimes, but like her. She's an expert at having fun and taking it easy, and I feel like I'm always working. She can also be really aggressive and defensive, but I struggle with that. I honestly wish that for certain things, I was more like her.

Their Expectations or Mine?

This is something I've struggled with for a LONG time. Until last year, I was always operating under my family's expectations. They wanted me to be a doctor, they wanted me to stay near them for college, and it was always their rules. It took me forever to finally find my own voice and figure out what I wanted to do. When I moved to USC and changed career plans, they weren't too happy about it, but they eventually got over it. Now they finally have the mindset that if I am happy, they're happy too. That being said, I'm really proud of myself for figuring everything out and taking the big leap to move to Seattle.

Role Model?

Haha honestly, I've always looked up to Starfire from Teen Titans since I was a kid. I always wanted to be open-minded and have a big heart just like her, and I think I'm like that now because of her. I feel like out of the other titans, she was the heart of the group, and I aspire to be that way too.

What Wild Animal Am I?

I really love deer and elks! They seem so calm, loving, and majestic. Whenever I'm playing a video game and they make me pick some sort of pet to keep, I always end up choosing a deer if the option is available. When it comes to wild animals, they are probably my favorites.

Encounter with Nature?

I remember when I was like 8, my grandpa was trying to teach me how to ride a bike. I was really getting the hang of it too! But then I rode straight into a thorn bush, and I couldn't get out haha. I am pretty sure I have some scars on my legs to this day.

  1. Hi Angelica,

First and foremost, I wanted to comment an answer to the question you posed in your blog post. If I were you, I would for sure do a road trip to Seattle. There are so many beautiful and fun places you could stop by at on the way there. Secondly, I was going to pick deer for my animal but I ended up going with turtles, but I still think deer are a great animal to have a connection with. Also when I first learned how to ride a bike I rode right into a tree...except I was 16 when that happened hahah.

  2. Hi Angelica!
I would definitely say if you have the opportunity to road trip, take it! Flying can be so draining and boring. I may also just be saying this because PHL lost my luggage yesterday and I can't think about planes for a while.
I feel like I am truly thriving when I eat Wawa's mac and cheese or their breakfast sandwiches. You can't really describe a Wawa to someone, they need to experience it!

  3. Hi Angelica,

Definitely related to your struggle with your parents expectations versus your own. My parents both have degrees in Biology and they really wanted me to follow suit, but in the end I didn't end up choosing to pursue that. They came around and are okay with the career path I chose, but it did take a while so props to you for that experience.
Also, really love the mention of Starfire from Teen Titans, I remember watching that show all the time growing up it was really great.

  4. Hi Angelica,
I agree with everyone else and say that you should do a road trip up to Seattle. Highway 1 is known as the prettiest highway in CA, but be prepared for a lot of traffic. Once you get to southern Oregon I think you should fly up to Seattle because the scenery gets pretty boring after then. I drove from Chico, CA to Spokane, WA and it was very repetitive (besides Weed, go there for a photo in front of their sign). When you go that far north you'll see miles of burnt landscape, which will make you pretty sad, so it's best to avoid. Also, LA is very gross and I can't wait to leave, but the weather is too cold for me!

  5. Hey Angelica,

I enjoyed reading your first blog post and thanks for sharing with you. I always wanted to experience that small town feeling having lived in California my entire life. I always wondered what the transition from a small city to a large city like LA felt like. Although I've never been to Seattle, I have friends there and working for Microsoft would be a cool experience as my sister, who currently works there, loves the work environment. Starfire being your role model is really unique and I used to watch teen titans as a kid and always wanted to be a part of a group like them, so I think that Starfire is a good choice and a good role model.

  6. Hello Angelica,

I think if you move to Seattle, it's worth the road trip. There are some really beautiful places to see along Oregon and Washington, especially in northwest Washington around and past Seattle. I've been only once or twice but remember it very fondly and would definitely like to drive there again.

Also, Teen Titans -- great show. Love that.

  7. Hi Angelica,

It's always cool to see other people from the east coast out at USC, especially small towns. I was pretty shocked by how different it was so it's great to see that you wanna stay in the west. It's great that you're pursuing what you want to do despite initial expectations, I'm sure in the long run that will lead to much greater happiness.

Also elk are great, I almost put them as my animal. The cry they make can be pretty beautiful/scary depending on the time of day you hear it in a forest.

  9. Hi Angelica,

Personally, I think a road trip would be really fun, especially if you go with someone else. However, I'm in love with plane flights because you can feel like a bird. To make this decision, I would suggest to pick the mode of transportation where you would be able to get an amazing nap.

I think deers are very interesting. I went deer hunting once. Instead of actually hunting them, I just took videos of them. My mentor wasn't very happy but I was ecstatic.

  10. Hey Angelica,

I think it's crazy that you think LA is too hot! It's probably because I'm from Southeast Texas, but Seattle was so cold when I visited in the summer! It sounds like it'll be perfect for you. Also, I have family in New Jersey, Holmdel to be exact. I really liked it when I visited. We are also both Cancer Moons:)

    Best,

    Brooke
