Book 2 Post 2

I will be honest and say that I did not get into Road Out of Winter as much as I wanted to. It didn't pull me in much, and I can definitely say that the plot is completely different from what I thought it was going to be. From reading the summary, I thought I was going to be whisked away into a magical world where the main character genuinely has solar powers, and she was going to use them to save her post-apocalyptic world. However, I have not read a single thing yet about Wil (the protagonist) having powers. It seems like the soils/seeds she gardens with are magical instead. I thought it was going to take place in a fictional world as well, but the characters are actually based in Ohio. In general, I just had so many different expectations with this novel, but none of them have really been met, and the plot doesn't really interest me anymore.

However, I will say that I love the writing style, which makes me want to keep going. It is SUPER easy to understand what is going on because the novel is so descriptive yet straightforward. She also includes a lot of dialogue which I love! It makes me feel like I am literally witnessing the conversations right in front of me. She is also able to introduce characters very well. In most cases, as soon as you meet someone in the novel, you quickly get an idea of their looks and attitude. Even for the townspeople, you know their history and thoughts. I love an author that can continuously paint a picture for their audience.

The book hasn't taught me anything specific yet, but this was definitely a learning lesson that I should apply to my life: not making assumptions. I feel like we talked about this in class too as it corresponds to critical thinking, but I should not have assumed that the plot would be like some sort of fantasy video game because I wanted it to be. I definitely should've looked at this more objectively and took more time to read the summary and reviews. If I didn't go in with such a stuck mindset, maybe I would've gone on for a lot longer. I'll try again in the near future and see what'll happen!

  1. Hi Angelica,

It's hard to hear that you didn't enjoy your book, but that happens sometimes. I liked how you addressed that if you read the book without any preconceived opinions, that your view might be different. Writing style is a huge factor for me when deciding whether I like a book or not. Your description of it makes me want to give Road Out of Winter a try. I probably won't though if the plot is a little boring.

  2. Hi Angelica,

I have also read books that I thought may be interesting, then a few chapters in I ask myself why I'm still reading it and put the book aside. It is frustrating, but in the end, it is better to not waste your time reading a book that you don't enjoy. Although you didn't enjoy the content of the book that much, it was nice to hear that you enjoyed the writing style of the book as that is one of the most important things when reading a book. In the book that I read On Tyranny, the writing style was amazing as the book was filled with pictures and was broken down into 20 points which made it really easy to follow.

  3. Hi Angelica!

I was originally going to pick this book because I really like thriller/mystery novels, but after reading some reviews, I ended up choosing another book. Now I feel kind of glad that I didn't pick this book, especially hearing from others in the class too. I'm sorry that this book didn't meet your expectations, but at least one aspect was appealing to you.

  4. Hi Angelica,

Sorry the plot didn't play out like you hoped. I also assumed it would be based in fantasy/magic. I'm glad you at least enjoy the writing style though. It sounds like I'd enjoy her work (maybe not this book) since I'm a very visual person and love dialogue-heavy books with a lot of detail. I hope your next book is more interesting :)

  5. Hey Angelica,

I also read Road Out of Winter and had the same thoughts as you. The funny thing is, I decided to pick this book over Losing Eden, even though it was much longer, because I thought I would enjoy it that much. However, it fell flat. I totally agree on the author having a great writing style, but that isn't enough to compensate for the weird and disappointing plot. Overall, it could have been better and felt great to read that you related as well. Great post!

    Best,

    Brooke

  6. Hi Angelica,

I'm sorry that this book didn't meet your expectations. But I'm glad you were able to learn a lesson from it. I think I'm such a judge a book by it's blurb that I often jump to assumptions. When I begin reading a book with set mindset, I tend to be disappointed. Maybe I should apply this lesson too.

    Best,

    Lesley
