World We Imagine Part 1

I am glad that for this first part of the assignment, we can free write and not limit ourselves to just one out of many ideas that could make the world a better place. When I finally looked at the notes that I was jotting down throughout the week, I noticed that they all have a similar theme of people being physically and mentally connected to each other as well as nature.

For example, I started writing notes about performing acts of kindness for other people and showing basic empathy. It would be cool to see some sort of Pay it Forward movement where one person does something nice, then the next person does something, and the cycle continues where everyone just does nice things for one another.

Then, I started writing a little more about the 60's and what the people in that era remind me of. I thought of physical connection like hand holding, hugging, dancing, and singing. These are different ways that seem to bond people from a bunch of different backgrounds. A kinder world would have more of all of these to bring people together. The 60's also reminds me of nature, and specifically tree hugging. A more empathetic world would care more about plant life and the future of the Earth itself. There would be more efforts to become more environmentally friendly, and the companies that hurt the environment (and even other people/animals) the most would find other humane ways to produce their goods.

In my last chunk of notes, I was writing about human connections and how I wish people of any background could connect. Specifically, it would be so cool if we could all speak/understand each other's languages. I've only seen this in cartoons, but it would be cool if there was some sort of device that could translate what other people say and then translate what you say back in real time. Not only that, but I would hope this is something everyone would use to be able to talk to each other.

All of these ideas are kind of over the place, but in general, I feel like a better world could start with empathy and love for all.

  1. Hi Angelica,

I loved your post! I remember in high school we did this little thing were we made an effort to pay it forward to people we interact with. I remember some people would simply give out compliments or open the door for someone. It made me feel good and I loved seeing the expressions on peoples faces. Also that would be so cool if we could all speak each others languages; that would make visiting other countries much simpler. I think I have heard of some potential apps that could possibly have these capabilities. I would invest in these kinds of applications and also create an app that encourages people to pay it forward to others.

  2. Thanks for sharing Angelica. I have also always had an admiration for the 60s. I think that a lot of people understood the idea that the world truly is what we make of it a lot better than people today. I feel like people could become a lot more aware of this by simply being kinder or making a small effort to help the planet each day. Personally, I try to pick up trash whenever I can because it is the least I can do, and it constantly keeps me aware that there is a lot more to do in this world than picking up trash. I also really like your idea about speaking other people's languages-- maybe that is the next step in making the world a better place. If more people could speak other languages, then maybe the culture gap in society we see today could be lessened.

  3. Angelica,

I love the way you wrote this and your commitment to looking at multiple ideas. It was really fun to read about your thoughts as they progressed throughout the week. I hadn't thought to write down my thoughts like you do, but I might start now. It sounds like a great way to organize your thoughts and to reflect on them throughout the week. I also think about the 60s alot and the style of life. I think theres a lot to be said about the positivity and cooperation alive during the 60s and the good that that can bring. Overall, it was great to hear your thoughts on the world we imagine!

    Regards,
    Michael

  4. Hey Angelica,

I really liked reading your various thoughts on this topic. I'm also having a hard time organizing my thoughts and choosing one topic to focus on; there are too many and it's hard to structure it! I also don't know why I completely forget about taking care of the environment in my perfect world, but that is so important and I'm glad you included it. I think we have pretty similar views on some these topics and found the nuances in your views super insightful and interesting like people being more physically connected. Great post and I can't wait to hear your pitch!

    Best,

    Brooke
